1920 – Hungary loses 71 percent of its territory and 63 percent of its population when the Treaty of Trianon is signed in Paris. The Treaty of Trianon was one of the five major peace treaties prepared at the Paris Peace Conference and was signed at the Grand Trianon Palace in Versailles. In this treaty, Hungary was treated as a losing party.
1941 – Wilhelm II dies at the age of 82. Wilhelm was the last German Emperor (Kaiser) and King of Prussia. He reigned from June 15, 1888, until his removal on November 9, 1918, shortly before Germany’s defeat in World War I. He was second in line to succeed his grandfather Wilhelm I on the German throne after his father, Frederick.
1943 – A military coup overthrows Ramon Castillo in Argentina. The army was opposed to Governor Robustiano Patrón Costas, Castillos’ chosen successor. The only serious resistance to the military coup came from the Argentine Navy, which clashed with army advancing columns at the Navy Mechanics School.
1961 – During the Cold War, at the Vienna Summit, Soviet Prime Minister Nikita Khrushchev ignites the Berlin Crisis by threatening to sign a special peace treaty with East Germany and end the entry of the Allies into East Berlin. The Vienna summit was a meeting between President John F. Kennedy and Prime Minister Nikita Khrushchev. The leaders of the two superpowers discussed numerous issues in the relationship between them.
1985 – Born in Gliwice, Luka Podolski. Podolski is a German professional footballer who plays as a striker for the Turkish team Antalyaspor. He is considered one of the best German players of his generation, and one of the best in world football. Some of the teams where he made his debut are Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Inter.
1986 – Jonathan Pollard pleads guilty to espionage for leaking military secrets to the Israeli military’s intelligence agency, Israel. He was sentenced to life in prison for violating the Espionage Act. Pollard is the only American to have received a life sentence for passing information classified to a US ally.
