1901 – The first Nobel Prize ceremony is held in Stockholm on the fifth anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The Nobel Prize is a set of annual international awards presented in several categories by Swedish and Norwegian institutions in recognition of academic, cultural or scientific progress in the world.
1932 – Robert Schwartz is born in Sarajevo. Schwartz translated some of the world’s greatest works into Albanian, including the novels of Remark, Goethe, Feihtvanger, Apic, Traven, and Marquez. Robert Schwartz passed away prematurely, on April 25, 2003, after a long heart disease. Robert Schwarz has been awarded the title of Grand Master by the President of the Republic. Well-known translator Robert Schwarz received this title shortly after receiving another title, that of Honorary Citizen of Tirana. This title was given to him on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Robert Schwarz’s name has become a symbol of the German language in Albania for years. A significance for this was exactly the year 1995, when the well-known translator was honored by the German Embassy in Tirana with the “Cross of German Merit” award. It should be remembered here that Schwarz was the first man of Albanian culture, who managed to get this title precisely in the field of translation. This title is also the first that the German president of that time awarded for a prominent figure of the Eastern countries.
1949 – During the Chinese Civil War, the People’s Liberation Army begins its siege of Chengdu, the last city held in Kuomintang on Chinese territory. In this siege these troops, forced, the President of the Republic of China Chiang Kai-shek and his government to withdraw to Taiwan. This would be the last battle between communists and nationalists.
1953 – British Prime Minister Winston Churchill receives the Nobel Prize in Literature. His prominence as a writer included a novel, two biographies, three volumes of memoirs, and several stories. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 “for his mastery of historical and biographical description, as well as for his excellent oratory in defense of exalted human values.”
1955 – Born in the village of Gërçec, Kim Mehmeti, writer, novelist, narrator, essayist, publicist and translator from Macedonian into Albanian and vice versa. He is one of the founders of the weekly “Lobi” which was published in Skopje from 2001 to 2006. He was the editor of the cultural magazine “Jehona” (Skopje), editor of the publishing activity at the USA. “Flame of Brotherhood” (1991-1992). At the Open Society Institute – Macedonia he worked as a coordinator of the publishing activity. Then he worked as editor-in-chief for Northern Macedonia, of the European Information Network (AIM) and was also the coordinator of this network for the Western Balkans (1993-2003). From 1997 to 2003 he was the Executive Director of the Center for Multicultural Cooperation and Understanding in Skopje. Kim Mehmeti works have been translated into German, French, Bulgarian, Turkish, Croatian and other languages
1978 – During the Arab-Israeli conflict, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat jointly win the Nobel Peace Prize. This award was given to them for signing the Peace Agreement, mediated by the United States of America, at Camp David. Begin died in 1992, while Sadat was assassinated in 1981.
1989 – During the Mongol Revolution, in the first open pro-democracy demonstration in the country, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj announces the creation of the Mongol Democratic Union. This, was a peaceful democratic revolution that started with demonstrations and hunger strikes to overthrow the People’s Republic of Mongolia and eventually moved towards present-day democratic Mongolia.
1996 – South Africa’s new constitution is proclaimed by Nelson Mandela. The Constitution of South Africa is the supreme law of the Republic of South Africa. It provides the legal basis for the existence of the republic, defines the rights and duties of its citizens and determines the structure of government. It entered into force on February 4, 1997, replacing the old Constitution.
2006 – Augusto Pinochet dies in Santiago at the age of 91. Pinochet, was a general, politician and of Chile from 1973 to 1990. Pinochet took power in Chile after a coup supported on September 11, 1973 that overthrew the government of Salvador Allende. Augusto Pinochet, was convicted in 1998 of crimes against his people by a British court.
