REPORT
Tirana, on 7/IV/1970, came to that 70-year-old Shtjefën Kurti, once a priest, now a cooperative member in Gurëz te Milot, to buy groceries in Tirana. He always complains that he is in a bad economic situation, so he has to work hard. Kurti asked him what had been done with the religious liturgy, that reforms and changes had been made. He replies that he also heard that some changes were made in the mass.
Kurti said that he had heard on the radio that changes had been made in the mass so that the believers in Italy had left the mass in protest. He added that he had not heard this. I don’t know what to say, said Kurti, this Pope is making big changes. From the West, it seems, the Catholic people are pampered. He says we don’t know anything anymore. I know a family in Gurëz that eats more every dinner without bread than with bread. Likewise, Bardhoku says, I know a family in Gurëz that is 18 people, that 3 workers go to work and I have seen them all summer months, they take bread with two roasted peppers with salt, or with half an onion.
I also know, says Bardhoku, people in Gurëz who go 3 weeks without shaving, why don’t they have 5 lek to buy a razor. Why can you call it a good life if you can’t buy a new shirt or a pair of pants for a year? – Every year everything has been getting narrower, what has been for years, will not be this year, what is this year, will not be next year.
There is no more, they said to me, my dynymi, yes, our dynymi, my cow is no more, but our cows, my chicken is no more, but our chickens, my voice is no more, but ours is, my house and my belongings are no longer there, but our houses and our belongings, and this only stops when it comes to the jackets you are wearing, Shtejfën Kurti told me.
In our government, says Bardhoku, only two people give orders, sometimes they ask a third, but what the first one says is done, and all the others, except for sehir. And the waste of a leader’s dishes can be enough to eat a family of 8 people who suffer for bread in Gurëz.
Shqefan Kurti told me that: the First Secretaries of the Party in the districts live well, they have three servants, one to sweep and wash, one to take care of the children and one for the kitchen. Thus, the First Secretary of the Party in Durrës has two cars at his disposal, a transport plane and a jet plane. This Shtejfën Kurti, despite being over 60 years old, has a fresh mind like that of a young Fringo and he knows more than those in Tirana.
