Part One

Memorie.al / It were expected. The Communists would be more merciless than anywhere else in the Mat district. Because there they saw the greatest danger to their newly acquired power. The destructive action of property confiscation would also extend harshly over the wealthy families of Mat, wherever they were, in Tirana or in the villages of Mat. Initially, the properties of those who had fled the country years earlier, together with King Zog, would be nationalized. The first would be the assets of Abdurrahman Mati, Allaman Çupi, Murat Basha and Bilal Kola, who had lived with their families in Tirana. Then the storm would go to Mat and engulf almost all the villages, striking naturally the families of Burgajet, Macukull, etc., to stop in distant Keta, where the regime does not cease to find an enemy even there.

It is the 21st date when decisions and abridgments of decisions are undertaken for the confiscation of the properties of the families of Mat. Starting from February 1946, to end in August 1947, for more than a year and a half of communist terror, the stripping of families from their properties was experienced, simply because the new regime considered them primarily linked to Zog, but also to other enemies who had emerged during the war years.

BRITISH FALLEN: THE ONLY FOREIGN MILITARY TROOPS WHO STEERED INTO ALBANIA AS LIBERATORS

The meeting with the dictator who led to her execution/ Sabiha Kasimati in Enver’s office: You are killing intellectuals, who are you going to make Albania with, tinsmiths or…?

The decisions for 131 families, which naturally were the wealthiest of Mat, were taken mostly in 1946, namely in February, April, September, November and December. Fewer decisions were taken in 1947, which were made in January, July and August. Below are listed the dates of the decisions as published in the Official Gazettes of the time, followed by the decisions for each family, with detailed data.

Their publication, listing them in full in this article, has historical value not only to understand which were the first families to suffer the blow and ruin, but it is also a service for them and others, to have the opportunity to know what happened in the first years of the establishment of the communist regime.

It is worth saying that this is only the first wave of the blow, which would later be followed by other actions against those deemed enemies, but also against the entire wealthy class who, years later, according to the Russian model, were declared “kulaks”, had all property rights removed, and in the years when property was taken from everyone through collectivization, there were other penalties for them, up to the removal of the right to education or to vote. Thus, if the list below has omissions, this means that the ruin for other families of Mat came later.
