Qazim Turdiut
Comrade Simon,
As I talked to Comrade Enver yesterday, I am sending you my self-criticism (in two copies) of the grave mistake I have made in recent months, in the context of the Party’s teachings on class struggle.
Forgive me for not being able to submit the self-criticism on my own, because today I am staying in bed (dizziness and headache). But it will pass.
Social greetings
Tirana, November 12, 1981 Mehmet Shehu
The archival document with the letter of the former Prime Minister Mehmet Shehu, sent to Enver Hoxha and the Politburo of the Central Committee of the ALP, where his self-criticism is about the mistake he had made for the engagement of the second son, Skënder, with the daughter of prof. . Qazim Turdiut
Dear friend Enver,
Dear friends of the Politburo
As a member of the party and as a member of the Politburo, I feel it my duty, although many of you are already aware of a grave mistake I have made in recent months, to say something from the beginning about its essence and above the circumstances of how I fell into that mistake and then analyze the causes and make self-criticism in front of you about the mistake I made.
Throughout my life as a communist, I have always tried to apply the Party line correctly, in all its fields, to carry out the class struggle according to the teachings of our Party, of Marxism-Leninism, and I have strived for it have always been consistent in developing towards the class war, against all enemies, internal and external.
But lately I have made a grave mistake precisely in the context of the class struggle. It is about the approval, by me, of my middle son, Skënder, for the engagement with the daughter of Professor Qazim Turdiu, who has a large family circle with hostile political and social composition, completely unsuitable for engagement of my son with his daughter.
In the summer of this year, when my son submitted to me for the first time the proposal for his close acquaintance with Qazim Turdiu’s daughter, with the further intention of engagement, he also informed me correctly about Qazim Turdiu’s hostile family circle, as far as he knew at the time. Then I received information from the Security organs (from Comrade Feçor Shehu), information which matched what my son had given me.
According to the information, it turned out that Qazim Turdiu is a professor of mathematics at the University, he was sent for specialization by us in the Soviet Union, he was decorated with the order “Naim Frashëri”, and his wife works as an accountant at the Autotractors Factory, a boy who has, continues her studies at the University, also continues her studies at the University and the girl, who is also a member of the women’s volleyball team of the club “Dinamo” and as such, has often gone abroad.
Qazim Turdiu, my son told me, has some brothers here, as teachers, pensioners, etc., but there are also two brothers who fled, one who fled during the US War, where he continues to carry out hostile activities against our socialist country and another was in Yugoslavia when he was sent to study by us shortly after the liberation and stayed there in 1948, when relations between our country and Yugoslavia broke down.
The son also told me that the girl’s mother is from Pipaj in Shkodra and then later, it turned out that these Pipajs were the first cousin of the girl’s mother, Arshi Pipa, who fled to the US with her sister, where she carries out hostile activities against us and she (the girl’s mother), after having another cousin who escaped from us, for hostile activities who was killed trying to escape, etc.
Based on the information I had at the time, I discussed the matter with Fiqret. Fiqrteti was hesitant, hesitant, but finally, I said to accept the boy’s proposal based on some considerations which I will try to explain below, considerations that then in those moments seemed right to me, but that in fact, as it became clear to me later, they were utterly wrong, and such as led me to the grave error for which I am making this self-criticism.
So, although the boy is to blame for the proposal he made, Fiqret also has his share of guilt, the main responsibility for this wrong decision that was taken in this case, I have. Because of course, if I had not given my approval for close acquaintance contacts of the boy with Qazim Turdiu’s daughter, the engagement would not have taken place.
And now, when I look at the matter deeply, it becomes clear to me to say, despite the information I received about Qazim Turdiu’s family and despite what I was told that his close family has no connection with the runaway relative, despite all of this, and so much information I had at first, from the boy himself, that data was enough to refuse my engagement immediately and categorically.
I would have acted as if the proposal had been made to me either by one of the other two boys (if they were unmarried), or by the brothers for their sons, or by anyone else. But, in the case of my second son, Skënder, I gave my consent for the engagement, based on wrong thoughts and considerations, as I will try to explain below, when I talk about the reasons and causes that led me to that mistake of seriously, seeing now the matter in the light of the just criticism and social assistance which Comrade Enver has given me several times in a row.
As soon as Comrade Enver found out that Skënder’s engagement had been made to the daughter of such a family, with a wide hostile circle, he called me and pointed out my mistake, arguing the issue politically and ideologically, laid out and socially, and told me that the mistake had to be corrected, that otherwise the Party line would be damaged. In that case, I collected myself immediately, realized that I had made a serious mistake, and told Comrade Enver that the mistake would be corrected and the engagement would definitely be broken.
The same attitude was held by Fiqret, as soon as I informed him, as well as the other two boys and their wives. I raised the issue at length with Skënder, who reacted correctly, immediately agreed to terminate the engagement and it was terminated the next day we discussed the issue with him.
Why did I make this mistake, what made me consent to my son’s engagement to a girl from such a circle, to fall into such a mistake, which is contrary to the principles of Party class warfare and contrary to the very revolutionary traditions of my family?
I think that the causes that led me to that serious mistake consist of several different factors, which are also related to some negative elements of my own character, which in special cases, appear even during the work of my life.
These negative elements in my character, taken as a whole, have not been born today, have not appeared in the years and in recent times, they have, as it were, been present constantly, throughout my life, as a man and as a communist, during to which I have also fought those negative elements, but, as it seems, this fight has been neither intense nor effective, and to the extent sufficient to uproot and eradicate them altogether.
As a result of the struggle I have waged, of course I have had improvements in this regard, but not to the extent that these elements of my character have completely disappeared. But I assure you, that this fact does not throw me into pessimism, does not make me capitulate before them and give up the fight for their complete disappearance.
The partial improvements I have had in the fight against them during my life, give me conviction and hope that I have the opportunity and strength to intensify this fight and finally win against these negative elements and this is done and done with the help of friends.
I am fully convinced that the mistake I made recently in the context of the class struggle over the boy’s engagement was worth to me as a “strong friend” (as a strong mental, psychological and practical shock) to him made the radical turn in my life, as a revolutionary for the eradication of those negative elements that are still observed in my character.
The main factors and negative elements in my character that influenced me to lead to the mistake I am talking about, but that in special cases and circumstances, if not fought and not eradicated, can also lead me to mistakes other, which I think are:
Excessive, excessive sentimentality, outside the communist logic, for my second son, Skënder. It is known that everyone has their own sentimentality for their children as well as for their friends and acquaintances. This is a just human feeling, as long as it remains within the limits of the general interest of society and does not exceed these limits, and to the detriment of the general interest. But this feeling, as Comrade Enver has pointed out to me, must be applied and it must act within the right Marxist logic, within the limits of the Party’s interests, it must be applied “with the brain in the head”, that is, with the revolutionary brain and not with the brain and logic of the micro-bourgeois, because as Comrade Enver teaches us, In Marxists, sentimentality has two sides: that of human feelings, that is, of the heart, but also of Marxist logic, of thinking as a revolutionary that starts first and foremost, from the general interest of society. . While in my case, in the case of giving my son approval, to enter into close contact, with further engagement purpose, with a girl from a family with hostile circle, pre-valued, dominated, the first aspect of sentimentalism, that of feelings (of the heart), over that of logic (of the brain).
