1942 – A Japanese submarine appears near the Columbia River in Oregon during World War II, firing 17 missiles at Fort Stevens in one of Japan’s only attacks on US territory. This military attack on the continental United States would be the only one carried out by the Japanese navy since the attack on Pearl Harbor.

 

 

1957 – Ellen Fairclough is sworn in as Canada’s first cabinet minister. As a member of parliament, she defended women’s rights, including equal pay for equal work. Fairclough was also appointed Acting Prime Minister of Canada from 19 February to 20 February 1958. She was defeated in the 1963 election by Liberal Joseph Macaluso.

1963 – Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini is elected Pope Paul VI. The papal conclave of 1963 was convened after the death of Pope John XXIII on June 3 of this year at the Apostolic Palace. After cardinal voters gathered in Rome, the contest to elect John’s successor began on June 19 and ended two days later, on June 21, after six votes. He accepted the election and took the name Paul VI.

 

1964 – Three civil rights activists, Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner, are assassinated in Neshoba County, Mississippi, in the United States, by members of the Ku Klux Klan. They had worked on the Summer Freedom campaign, trying to register African-Americans in Mississippi to vote. The incident was one of the most serious in U.S. racial history.

 

1970 – Sukarno dies at age 69. Sukarno, was an Indonesian politician who was Indonesia’s first president, serving from 1945 to 1967. He was a prominent leader of the Indonesian nationalist movement during the Dutch colonial period and spent over a decade under Dutch detention until he was released by Japanese occupying forces in World War II.

 

1983 – Born in North Carolina, Edward Snowden. Snowden, is an American informant who copied and disclosed information classified by the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013 when he was an employee and subcontractor of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). His findings sparked a cultural debate about national security and individual privacy.

 

2004 – SpaceShipOne becomes the first private donor-funded aircraft to achieve a space flight. SpaceShipOne is an experimental air-launched aircraft with missiles with sub-orbital space capability of flying at speeds of up to 900 m in s using a hybrid rocket engine. SpaceShipOne completed its first private space flight in 2004.
