1886 – Eighth-day rallies are held throughout the United States, culminating in the Haymarket affair in Chicago, in commemoration of which May 1 is celebrated as International Workers’ Day in many countries. The Haymarket case was described as the explosion of a bomb during a rally for workers’ rights in the square of the same name in Chicago. Twelve people lost their lives in this terrorist act.

 

1931 – The Empire State Building in New York City is completed. The Empire State Building is a 102-story Art Deco-style mansion in Midtown, Manhattan, New York City. This building was designed and designed by Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon. It was built from 1930 to 1931. Its name is derived from “Empire State”, the pseudonym of the federal state of New York.

1947 – The Portella Della Ginestras Massacre against the May Day celebrations in Sicily takes place. It was organized by the bandit and separatist leader Salvatore Giuliano, where 11 people were killed and 33 others were injured. The Portella Della Ginestras massacre was one of the most violent acts in the history of modern Italian politics, the reasons for which still remain a mystery.

 

1956 – A doctor in Japan reports an “epidemic of an unknown disease of the central nervous system”, marking the official discovery of the disease Minamata. Minamata is a neurological disease caused by severe mercury poisoning. Signs and symptoms include ataxia, numbness in the hands and feet, general muscle weakness, loss of peripheral vision, and hearing impairment.

 

1960 – A U-2 crash occurs during the Cold War. U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers, who was piloting a Lockheed U-2 spy plane, was shot at the Sverdlovsk Oblast in the Soviet Union, causing a severe diplomatic crisis between the two countries. Powers were caught and tried for espionage. He was exchanged in Berlin with Russian agent Rudolph Abel.

 

1978 – Aram Khachaturian dies at the age of 74. Khachaturian was a Soviet composer and conductor of Armenian descent. He is considered one of the most prominent composers of the former Soviet Union. Some of his masterpieces are, Gayane, Spartacus, Sabre Dance, and Masquerade Suite. One of the main elements in his music would be fragments of Armenian folk music.

 

1987 – Leonardo Bonucci is born in Viterbo. Bonucci is a professional Italian footballer who plays as a central defender for him and serves as the vice-captain of both Serie A clubs Juventus and the Italian national team. Some of the teams he has debuted are, Inter, Milan, and Juventus. Bonucci is considered one of the best center-backs in the world. He has won 35 national and international football awards.

 

1994 – Three-time Formula One world champion Ayrton Senna dies in a car accident while driving the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola. The day before, Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger had died when his car crashed while qualifying for the race. The cause of these collisions was technical defects. These two accidents are considered the most serious in the history of the Formula 1 racing competition.
