2008 – Kosovo declares its independence from Serbia. The independence was declared by a unanimous decree in the Kosovo Parliament and was read by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. Kosovo’s independence, backed by major European and world powers, came after a centuries-long bloody war from Serbian occupation. Today, Kosovo is officially recognized by 115 countries around the world.
