1883 – The Metropolitan Opera House is inaugurated in New York, USA. This building was an opera house located at 1411 Broadway in New York City. It opened in 1883 and was demolished in 1967. It was the first home of the Metropolitan Opera Company. In 1903, architects Carrère and Hastings extensively redesigned the interior of the opera house. The famous golden auditorium with its sun chandelier, and the curved proscenium engraved with the names of the six composers, dates from this time.

 

1923 – A coup attempt by Leonardopoulos-Gargalidis takes place in Greece. This was a failed military coup launched on October 22, 1923 in Greece by pro-royal officers under the command of Lieutenant General Georgios Leonardo Poulos and Panagiotis Gargalidis, along with Colonel Georgios Ziras. The failure of this coup, in Athens, discredited the monarchy and contributed decisively to the creation of the Second Greek Republic in March 1924.

1934 – FBI agents shoot American Pretty Boys Floyd to death. He operated in the western and central states of the United States, and his criminal activities received widespread coverage in the press in the 1930s. He was pursued and killed by a group of FBI agents led by Melvin Purvis… Floyd has continued to be a well-known figure in the American media, which is sometimes seen as infamous, other times portrayed as a tragic figure, even a victim of the difficult times of the Great Depression in the United States.

 

1946 – Operation Osoaviakhim takes place in the occupied territory of East Germany. In this military operation, Soviet Red Army troops supported by those of the NKVD forcefully recruit more than 2,200 German specialists. Together with their families, this number would go to nearly 6000 people. These forced recruitments by the Soviets were made after Moscow needed German scientists and engineers to produce space and nuclear missiles. This project would later be coded as DOSAAF.

 

 

1947 – The Kashmir War between India and Pakistan officially begins. The conflict began after India’s Declaration of Independence in 1947, as a dispute over the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. This conflict escalated into three wars between India and Pakistan, as well as several other armed clashes. China is also involved in the conflict in a third-party role. Today India controls approximately 55 percent of the region’s area, Pakistan controls approximately 30 percent of the land, while China controls the remaining 15 percent.

 

1964 – Drazen Petrovic, one of the most famous basketball players of all time, is born in Sibenik, Croatia (then Yugoslavia). Petrovic, during his 15-year career would debut in some of the best basketball teams such as Cibona, Real Madrid, Portland, etc. He would also be considered one of the best players in the Yugoslav national basketball team, where he would win many national and international trophies. Petrovic would also win the most important awards of this sport, such as the All NBA Team, Top 50 basketball players, etc.

 

2002 – The Queen of Albania, and at the same time the wife of the former King Ahmet Zogu, Geraldine Appony, dies at the age of 86 in Geneva, Switzerland. She was born into a Hungarian aristocratic family, and was raised there. In 1938 she married King Zogu and thus gave birth a year later, Prince Leka I. After the invasion of Albania by Italy, she, together with her husband and family, left for countries such as Turkey, Egypt, France, and South Africa, from where she could return to the country only after the advent of democracy.
