1921 – The Irish Government Act of 1920 is adopted, dividing Ireland into Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. The long title of the Act was “An Act that provides for the best government in Ireland”. The act aimed to create separate institutions within two new subdivisions of Ireland: the six north-eastern counties were to form “Northern Ireland”, while most of the country was the “Southern Ireland” formation.
1928 – A Chinese woman is killed by Chinese forces in an incident involving twelve Japanese civilians. This act led to the revenge of the Japanese, and the death of over 2,000 Chinese civilians in the following days. This massacre would also be the prelude to the subsequent Japanese occupation of eastern China. The Japanese army would eventually leave China only after the end of World War II.
1939 – The All India Front is formed by Subhas Chandra Bose. The All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) is a left-wing nationalist political party in India. It emerged as a faction within the 1939 Indian National Congress, led by Subhas Chandra Bose. The party was re-established as an independent political party after India’s independence. Its main headquarters are in West Bengal.
1952 – Lt. Col. Joseph O. Fletcher and William P. Benedict of the United States land on the North Pole. The two, along with scientist Albert P. Crary, became the first Americans to sit down and set foot in the North Pole. Unknown to Fletcher and his team, it was the fact that a Soviet expedition had previously landed three Lisunov Li-2s in poles on April 23, 1948.
1963 – A Birmingham police force in Birmingham changes tactics and responds forcefully to stop the “Birmingham campaign” protesters. Images of violent repression are being broadcast around the world, drawing new attention to the civil rights movement. The Birmingham Campaign was a movement organized in early 1963 by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to bring attention to the integration efforts of African-Americans.
1971 – Erich Honecker becomes the First Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, remaining in power until 1989. He controlled the government of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1971 until he was forced to leave in the following weeks. precedes the fall of the Berlin Wall in the late 1980s. Honecker is considered one of the most authoritarian leaders of the DDR.
1985 – Born in Rosario, Ezequiel Lavezzi. Lavezzi is a professional Argentine footballer who has played for the Chinese club Hebei China Fortune and the Argentine national team as a striker. 2008 – Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo dies at the age of 82. Calvo Sotelo was the Prime Minister of Spain between 1981 and 1982. After the failed coup, his appointment as Prime Minister was confirmed on February 25 by the vote of all members of the UCD Congress and 21 others as well, giving it to him. a majority of 186 to 158. He was subsequently succeeded in this post, by Felipe Gonzales.
