1904 – The Gothenburg IFK football club is founded in Sweden. This sports club would make a dignified appearance at the elite football championship in this country. Goteborg IFK over the years would win 66 national and international trophies and cups, thus ranking in one of the best Swedish football teams alongside Malmo FF, IFK Norrkoping, and AIK.
1921– On October 4 of this year, a group of Albanian intellectuals establish the Albanian Red Cross Association. The first president of this association was elected Dr. Rifat Frashëri. This is the oldest humanitarian organization in Albania, founded on October 4, 1921 and was officially recognized by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in 1923. Its headquarters are located in the Albanian capital Tirana. The Albanian Red Cross has 39 branches which provide humanitarian aid throughout the country, in accordance with the Basic Principles of the respective organization. In the years 1969 – 1990 the Albanian Red Cross ceased its activity. The association has aimed and succeeded in training First Aid volunteers as well as setting up First Aid services in stadiums and mass public events. So far, first aid instructors and volunteers have been trained. First aid teams have been noted for their contribution in assisting the victims during the riots of the spring of 1997 and during the arrival of displaced persons from Kosovo. ANC in the field of First Aid works to raise public awareness and other interested groups about the need to provide this assistance, as well as its preparation with the skills of how this assistance is provided in case of injuries in accidents, illness or life-threatening poisoning.
1955 – Jorge Valdano is born in Las Parejas, Argentina. Valdano during his 15-year career, would be considered one of the best footballers of this country. He would debut with the Newell Old Boys, Alaves, Real Zaragoza, and Real Madrid teams. At the same time, he would win the World Cup with Argentina in 1986. Jorge Valdano would win 10 personal trophies as a result of his outstanding play in these teams. He would also lead the Real Madrid team by declaring him the champion of Spain.
1957 – Soviet satellite Sputnik 1 is launched into space for the first time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. This will also be the first object thrown by humanity into the space atmosphere. This satellite was designed by scientist Sergey Korolev. The launch of this technological object in the galaxy would also start the spatial race between the two superpowers.
1967 – After 17 years at the helm of the Kingdom of Brunei, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien abdicates in favor of his son Hassanal Bolkiah. Under the leadership of this dynasty, the small Brunei state in Southeast Asia would recognize high economic prosperity, and social welfare. Sultan Omar Ali would have 10 children with 6 of his wives. This dynasty continues to rule Brunei to this day.
1992 – A peace agreement is signed in Rome to end Mozambique’s 16-year civil war. This agreement was made possible through the intervention of the Community of Sant Egidio, through its religious missionaries. As for the warring parties, it would be signed by Jaime Goncalves and Raoul Domingos. This agreement would be broken 20 years later, by the Mozambican government.
2001 – A Siberian Airlines Flight 1812 explodes in the air from a rocket fired by Ukrainian military troops. As a result of this incident, all 78 passengers, including crew members, would have died on the spot. Official Kiev would apologize and justify the accident after stating that the rockets were fired incorrectly during a drill. Ukraine would pay $ 15 million to the families of the victims.
2013 – Famous Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap dies at the age of 102 in Hanoi. Giap would be considered by military analysts as one of the country’s greatest strategists. Under his leadership the Vietnamese guerrilla army would defeat French troops at Dien Bienf Phu and then American troops at Saigon. For these merits he would be elected for many years also as Minister of Defense of Vietnam.
