1900 – During World War II, the United Kingdom annexes the Free State of Orange. The Free State of Orange was an independent sovereign republic of Boer in South Africa during the second half of the 19th century, which ceased to exist after it was defeated and surrendered to the British Empire at the end of World War II in 1902. .It was the historical forerunner of today’s Free State province.

 

1937 – Born in Shkodra Serafin Fanko was an Albanian actor and director honored with the title of People’s Artist. Serafini had a tragic childhood, between 1946-1948 he and his sister lived in an orphanage until his grandmother took them and lived with him. Serafin Fanko completed his higher studies at the Academy of Arts in Prague and at the Higher Institute of Arts in Tirana. His first film is “Threads Cut”. He then excelled in 1977, with the film “Guns on the Wire” where he played one of the roles of the kingdom of Savoy. In recent years he has excelled as a drama director. He was honored with the title “People’s Artist”

1946 – Tansu Çiller is born in Istanbul. Chiller is a Turkish academic, economist, and politician who served as Turkey’s 22nd Prime Minister from 1993 to 1996. She is Turkey’s first and only female Prime Minister. As the leader of the True Road Party, she continued to serve both as Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1996 and 1997.

1956 – The first Eurovision Song Contest is held in Lugano, Switzerland. The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual international song festival, held annually by the Eurovision Song Contest since 1956 (excluding 2020), with participants representing mainly European countries. About 50 countries have been competing in the event since 1956.

 

 

1959 – John Foster Dulles, 71, dies. Dulles was an American diplomat. A Republican, he served as Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959. He was an important figure in the early Cold War era, defending a strong stance against communism around the world…

 

 

1962 – During the Mercury Project, American astronaut Scott Carpenter orbits the Earth three times in the space capsule Aurora 7. He was the sixth man to fly into space. The mission used the ship Mercury no. 18 and Atlas launch vehicle no. 107-D. The flight was for three Earth orbits, essentially a repetition of John Glenn’s Mercury-Atlas 6. This capsule traveled over 400 km.

 

1981 – Equatorial President Jaime Roldos Aguilera, his wife, and his presidential committee die in a plane crash while traveling from Quito to Zapotillo minutes after the president gave a famous speech in Pichincha. Aguilera was the 33rd President of Ecuador from 1979-1981. In his short term, he became known for his determined stance on human rights.

 

1999 – The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, the Netherlands, finds Slobodan Milosevic guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. At the start of the trial, he denounced the tribunal as illegal. Milosevic defended himself in a five-year trial that ended without trial when he died in his prison cell in The Hague on March 11, 2006.

 

2002 – Russia and the United States sign the Moscow Treaty. It was a strategic arms reduction treaty between the United States and Russia that was in force from June 2003 to February 2011 when it was overthrown by the new START treaty. Following ratification by the US Senate and the Russian Duma, the SORT entered into force on June 1, 2003. This was one of the most important pacts signed between Russia and the United States.
