1901 – US Congress passes the Platt Amendment restricting Cuban autonomy as a condition of withdrawal of US troops. He set seven conditions for the withdrawal of United States troops left in Cuba at the end of the Spanish-American War, and the eighth condition for Cuba to sign a treaty accepting these seven terms offered.
1925 – Luigj Gurakuqi died, on the evening of March 2, 1925, in the restaurant of the hotel “Cavour”, Luigj Gurakuqi was having dinner with two of his friends and the wife of one of them: Riza Dani with his wife Makbule and his brother Dan Hasani. He asked their permission, saying: I will go to Sotiri, after I promised a doll to his daughter. Leaving the hotel restaurant he was seen with Balto Stamolla, a distant cousin 4-5 generations with the Gurakuqs, who fired three bullets. In the torn pockets of the former Minister of Finance the Italian police found only 350 lira. He started eating once a day when the refugees came out. The police station informed the Albanian colony that the ceremony could not take place in the city, but only inside the walls of the cemetery. Albanian refugees from all over rushed to Bari. Speeches were given by Sotir Gjika’s wife, Mrs. Lilli Quarta, Ll. Fundos, B. Walterit et al. In the moments of preparation for the funeral, Gurakuqi’s close friend, Gjon Kamsi, kept the dress he was wearing when he was killed. In 1957 his remains were reburied in Albania.
1930 – dies at Vence, age 44, David Lawrence. Lawrence, was an English writer and poet. His collected works represent, among other things, a broad reflection on the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization. Some of the issues Lawrence addresses are sexuality, emotional health, vivacity, spontaneity, and instinct. E. M. Forster described him as “the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation.”
1955 – Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia, abducts from the throne in favor of his father, Norodom Suramar. Suramar was born in Phnom Penh to Prince Norodom Sutharot. He was King of Cambodia from March 2, 1955, until his death in 1960. When his grandfather King Norodom died in 1904, Norodom’s brother, Sisowath, took the throne. He died in 1927 and was succeeded by his son Monivong.
1962 – Born in Perth, Jon Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, philanthropist, and actor. Bon Jovi is best known as the founder and frontman of the Grammy Award-winning rock band Bon Jovi, which was launched in 1983. Bon Jovi has released 14 studio albums with his band; to date, the band has sold over 130 million albums worldwide.
1978 – Czech Vladimir Remek becomes the first non-Russian and non-American astronaut to enter space when he departs aboard Soyuz 28. As the first cosmonaut from another European country, and with the entry of the Czech Republic and Slovakia into the Union European, Remek is considered to be the first astronaut from the European Union. Remek was a member of the European Parliament between 2004 and 2013 and, since 2014, has been the Czech Ambassador to Russia.
1991 – Battle of the Rumaila oil field puts an end to the Gulf War of 1991. Rumaila is said to be the largest oil field ever discovered in Iraq and is considered the third-largest oil field in the world. Disputes between Iraq and Kuwait over alleged oil drilling in the field was one of the reasons Kuwait invaded Iraq in 1990. Rumaila is a border area between the two states.
1995 – Yahoo is officially established. Yahoo is a US Internet service provider based in Sunnyvale, California, and owned by Verizon Media. This company was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in January 1994 and published on March 2, 1995. This site was one of the pioneers of the early Internet era in the 1990s. Despite its decline in importance, the Yahoo site is still among the most popular, ranking 10th in the world.
2017 – Elements Moscovium, Tennessine and Oganesson were officially added to the periodic table at a conference in Moscow, Russia. Moscovium is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Mc and atomic number 115, Tennessee is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Ts and atomic number 117, while Oganesson is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Og and atomic number 118.
