1904 – The Battle of Port Arthur comes to an end during the Russo-Japanese War. The Battle of Port Arthur, February 8–9, 1904 marked the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War. 1959 – Semyorka R-7, the first intercontinental ballistic missile, becomes operational in Plesetsk, USSR. In a modified form, it launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite into orbit, and became the basis for the R-7 family which included Sputnik, Luna, Molniya, Vostok and Voskhod space launchers, as well as later variants of Soyuz. 1977 – Sergey Ilyushin dies at age 82 in Moscow. Ilyushin was a Soviet aircraft designer who founded the Ilyushin aircraft design office. It designed the Il-2 Shturmovik, which made its first flight in 1939.
