1922 – The United Kingdom ends its protectorate over Egypt through a unilateral Declaration of Independence. Through this declaration, the British government unilaterally ended its protectorate over Egypt and granted it nominal independence, with the exception of four “reserved” areas: foreign relations, communications, the military, and the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan.
1953 – James Watson and Francis Crick announce the news that they have determined the chemical structure of DNA. The official announcement is made on April 25 after the publication in Natyra e Prilli. DNA is a molecule made up of two chains that wrap around each other to form a helix that carries genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth and reproduction of all known organisms.
1954 – Actor and director Enver Petrovci was born in Pristina. He studied at the Pedagogical University in Pristina, in the acting department, then completed his university studies as an actor at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts at the University of Belgrade. He is one of the founders of the Dramatic Arts department and the Academy of Arts at the University of Pristina. In 1989, Mr. Petrovci returned from Belgrade to lecture on acting at the University of Pristina and formed a new cadre of actors in Kosovo.
1957 – Born in Brooklyn, John Turturro. Turturro is an American actor, writer, and director, known for his association with the independent film movement. His subsequent roles included Herb Stempel in Quiz Show, Jesus Quintana in The Big Lebowski, and The Jesus Rolls, Pete in O Brother, Where Are You, Seymour Simmons in the Transformers film series, and Carmine Falcone in the DC Extended Universe.
1959 – Discoverer 1, an American spy satellite that is the first object intended to reach a polar orbit, is launched but fails to reach orbit. Discovere 1 was the first of a series of satellites that were part of the CORONA discovery satellite program. A CIA report, later declassified, concluded that “Today, most people believe it landed somewhere near the South Pole.
1967 – Henry Luce dies at age 68 in Phoenix. Luce, was an American magazine magnate who was called “the most influential private citizen in America of his day.” Time was the news magazine of the week, Life was a picture magazine of politics, culture and society, Fortune reported on national and international business, and Sports Illustrated explored the world of sports.
1972 – The United States and China sign the Shanghai Communiqué. The document pledged that it was in the interest of all nations that the United States and China work toward normalizing their relationship, although this would not happen until the joint communique signed seven years later. The US and China also agreed that neither they nor any other power should “seek hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region”.
1986 – Olof Palme, the 26th Prime Minister of Sweden, is assassinated in Stockholm. Olof Palme, the Prime Minister of Sweden, was fatally shot by a single gunshot while walking home from a cinema with his wife Lisbet Palme on Stockholm’s central Sveavwgen street. Lisbet Palme was slightly injured by a second shot. The government couple did not have bodyguards with them.
