1910 – Eleftherios Venizelos is elected Prime Minister of Greece for the first time. Venizelos, who came from Crete, would rule the Greek state in 6 different political terms. He would become known for restoring political and diplomatic relations with Ataturk’s Turkey, involving Greece in the Balkan Wars, and occupying southern Albania from military formations led by him. The Venizelos dynasty would continue to dominate Greece politically in the future.
1930 – Hafez al Assad, President of Qardaha, Syria, is born. He would rule Syria from 1970 until his death in 2000. During his rule, Syria would experience economic growth as a result of its exploitation of oil and gas resources. He would build a policy of peace and cooperation not only with other Arab states but also with the West. After his death from cancer in 2000, power would be taken over by his son Bashar, who would also cause the bloody civil war in this country.
1973 – Egypt and Syria coordinate a powerful military offensive against Israeli positions. During the Yom Kippur War, which would last 20 days, Israeli military forces would face Egyptian and Syrian forces in the Suez Canal and the Golan Heights. From these attacks 3000 Israelis would die while, from the Egyptian and Syrian sides the losses would be around 10,000 people. Upon completion of these attacks, the joint Egyptian-Syrian troops would retreat beyond their positions.
1976 – Chinese Communist leader Hua Guofeng orders the arrest of the so-called Gang of Four. With the arrest of this group of which they belonged, Mao’s wife Jiang Qing, and three other members of the Politburo, thus officially ended the era of the Cultural Revolution purges. Jiang Qing would be sentenced to life in prison, along with all three of her colleagues, who were charged with attempted coup.
1981 – Egyptian President Anwar Sadat dies at the age of 62 in a terrorist attack. Sadat would rule the Egyptian state from 1970 until his death. He would win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978 as a result of the signing of a ceasefire agreement with Israel. For this reason, he was shot dead by an organized assassination, by a group of Islamic extremists. He was killed along with his bodyguards while pursuing a military parade in Cairo.
2002 – Ismail Lulani, teacher and painter, one of the most prominent names in Albanian art, dies. In 1967 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts for monumental painting, his diploma work “Ded Gjo Luli with bravery”, was highly praised by the critics of the time. He was appointed and worked as a professor at the Academy of Arts in Tirana and then voluntarily settled in the city of Shkodra where he worked as a professor at the Art High School of this city until he came out as a painter in free creativity. He was one of the founders of the branch of visual arts (in the artistic high school “Prek Jakova”) in the city of Shkodra. He was a member of the League of Writers and Artists of Albania. Ismail Lulani is one of the most original and powerful painters in the history of Albanian art, he was a very active painter in his creativity, he masterfully explored in all genres of painting, such as composition, landscape, portrait, calm natures. His paintings are distinguished for the power and magic games of color, for expressive drawing and expressive tools. After his death, on the 70th anniversary of his birth, he was awarded the title “Pride of Shkodra” which was handed over to the artist’s friend.
2007 – British adventurer Jason Lewis becomes the first person in the world to describe him for a floating boat. He would use the pedal boat and oars with the power of his limbs describing for 46 days nearly 2000 nautical miles. In the end after many stops, through the various ports of the world, Lewis had described a total distance of about 75,000 km. This mission would also be called the Expedition 360
2010 – Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launch an app called Instagram. This application would also serve as a network of social communication and distribution of videos and photos. Very soon Instagram would compete with Facebook and other applications, thus occupying the first place, in terms of the number of users. By mid-2019, Instagram registered nearly 1 billion users worldwide.
