1896 – The shortest war in world history begins (09:02 to 09:40) between the United Kingdom and Zanzibar. The conflict lasted between 38 and 45 minutes, and the immediate cause of the war was the death of the pro-British Sultan Hamad bin Thuwayne on August 25, 1896, and the subsequent succession of Sultan Khalid bin Barghash.
1928 – The Kellogg-Briand Pact to promote the notion of foreign war is signed by 15 nations. Ultimately 65 nations will sign it. The pact was signed by US Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg and French Foreign Minister Aristide Briand. The pact was concluded outside the League of Nations and remains in force.
1939 – The first turbocharged flight of the Heinkel He 178 takes place, the world’s first jet engine. The Heinkel He 178 was the first aircraft in the world to fly under turbocharged power. This was an action by the German company Heinkel in accordance with the decision of the director Ernst Heinkel in the development of technology for high-speed flight.
1962 – NASA launches the Mariner 2 unmanned space mission to Venus. Mariner 2, an American space probe for Venus, was the first robotic space probe to conduct a successful planetary encounter. Mariner 2 was launched from Cape Canaallel on August 27, 1962 and traveled nearly 35,000 miles to Venus on December 14, 1962.
1965 – Charles Edouard Jeanneret, nicknamed Le Corbusier, dies at the age of 77. Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, and one of the pioneers of what is now regarded as modern architecture. His career spanned five decades, and he designed buildings in Europe, Japan, India and America.
1982 – Turkish military diplomat Colonel Atilla Altıkat is shot and killed in Ottawa. The Justice Commands claim that they are taking revenge for the massacre of 1.2 million Armenians killed in this genocide. They waged an international campaign of attacks, mainly in Europe and North America, killing numerous Turkish government attachés.
1986 – Born in Vienna, Sebastian Kurz. Kurz, has been the Chancellor of Austria since January 2020, a position he held from December 2017 to May 2019. At the age of 33, Kurz is the youngest head of government in the world, and is elected first for the post at age 31, the youngest chancellor in Austrian history.
2003 – The first six-party talks involving South and North Korea, the United States, China, Japan and Russia come together to find a peaceful solution to North Korea’s nuclear weapons security concerns. The talks were the result of North Korea’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
