1894 – The Dreyfus case begins in France, when Alfred Dreyfus is wrongly convicted of high treason. It was a political scandal that divided the French Third Republic in 1894-1906. “The Dreyfus case symbolizes modern injustice in the Francophone world. It remains one of the most obvious examples of a misconduct of justice and anti-Semitism.
1903 – Albanian sculptor Odhise Paskali was born in Përmet, considered the founder of Albanian sculpture and one of the most important personalities of Albanian art. In 1919 he went to Italy, where in 1923 he graduated from the Lyceum and enrolled in the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy in Turin, in 1927 he defended his diploma in the field of art history. The first steps of Odysseus’ career are in the field of journalism. He excelled in aesthetics and art criticism. The People’s Sculptor is known for about 600 works in sculpture, but above all in his diverse creativity are known works: “Skanderbeg Monument in Tirana” with co-authors, 1968, “Naum Veqilharxhi”, bronze bust, in Korça, “Victorious Partisan” (Mathauzen, Austria) 1968 etc.
1959 – Born in Augsburg, Bernd Schuster. Schuster, is a German footballer from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. He won many club titles playing for the Spanish teams FC Barcelona (1980-1987) and Real Madrid (1988-1990). He played as a midfielder and his nickname was “der Blonde Engel” (Blonde Angel).
1974 – The house of former British Prime Minister Edward Heath is attacked by IRA members. He was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1974 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1965 to 1975. Heath also served for 51 years as Member of Parliament from 1950 to 2001.
1989 – Samuel Beckett dies in Paris at the age of 83. Beckett, was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theater director, poet and literary translator. He is considered one of the last modernist writers and one of the leading figures in what Martin Esslin called the “Theater of the Absurd”.
1990 – Lech Walesa is elected President of Poland. Walesa, is a Polish statesman, dissident, union organizer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate (1983). From the Gdansk site electrician, he became the leader of Solidarnost, a social movement oriented towards freedom and trade unionism and later served as the first democratically elected President of Poland.
1997 – Hussein Farrah Aidid relinquishes the controversial title of President of Somalia by signing the Cairo Declaration in Egypt. The resignation was the first major step towards reconciliation in Somalia since 1991. Hussein is the son of General Mohamed Farrah Aidid. His father was the leader of the SNA, the organization that fought American forces in Mogadishu.
2016 – A study confirms that the VSV-EBOV vaccine against Ebola virus is 100 percent effective, making it the first vaccine tested against the disease. About half of people who get the vaccine have moderate effects that include headaches, fatigue and muscle aches, due to this disease.
2017 – UN Security Council votes 15–0 in favor of additional sanctions on North Korea. These sanctions include measures to reduce oil imports to the country until their complete reduction. The West imposed these sanctions as a result of the development of the Pyongyang Nuclear Program.
