Question: Tell us, witnesses, if you know Bedri Spahiu?
Answer: Yes, I know Dhora, Bedri Spahiu.
Question: Since when and how did you meet Bedri Spahiu?
Answer: I, Dhora, have known Bedri since the time of the War, as a leader, but I have known him better personally after the liberation, in the Tuku family, on the beach and in their family.
Question: How was the relationship between you?
Answer: The relationship between us has always been good.
Question: When you went to Elbasan, did you meet Bedri Spahiu, and if so, what was discussed between you?
Answer: The first time I went to Elbasan was in 1955, in October-November. I went with the service sheet from the Ministry of Education and Culture to see the preparations for the operetta “Trebita”, prepared by the House of Culture of Elbasan.
On this occasion, I took the opportunity to meet Bedri’s friend, Nedo Spahiu, whom I had known before. I asked Mit’hat Stringa at the House of Culture where she worked and he told me that she works for the Collection Company, is a party member and can talk to her.
I told her I was going to get some money from her, so I ask? Mit’hati gave me the servant of the House of Culture, who took me to the job where Nedoja worked. When I met Nedon, she was surprised to see me, locked the door from the inside and I told her that we had information in Tirana, and specifically from Piro Kondi’s family, that the Central Committee would consider the case of Tuk Jakova and Bedri Spahiu, so Nedo, to tell Bedri, that he should prepare for it.
Nedoja asked me about Tuk and Mita, how they were and I informed them about their economic situation and with that I left. I made this meeting with Nedon on my own initiative. Nedoja was very happy about this and told me that he would communicate to Bedri.
The second time I met Nedon was on November 8, 1955, at my house in Tirana, she came to get some things from me, like an 8 meter carpet and a deck.
When I came from outside, I found in the living room of the house together with my sister, Mita Jakova, what they had talked about, she did not tell me, only that Nedoja told me that; What you told me about the case of Bedri and Tuk, that it would be submitted to the Central Committee, is true, because as Nedoja said, Pirro Kondi’s family had told her. I told them both about the conversation I had with Rexhep Xhika, a functionary of the Yugoslav Legation, the night before November 7, 1955, at the reception of the Soviet Legation. The interest he had for Tuk ……!
The second time I went to Elbasan was in December 1955, I do not remember the exact date. This time too, with a service sheet from the Ministry of Education and Culture, about the preparation of the Opera “Trembita”. But, the main reason this time, was because I had sent directly from the First Secretary of the Yugoslav Legation, Cveto Vuçiiç, to meet Bedri Spahiu, who had given me these messages: “To ask Bedri Spahi, where is the claim of the Prosecutor for the trial of Koci Xoxa and other judicial material about the trial of Koci Xoxa, what Bedri thought, for the solution of the problem related to the relations with Yugoslavia”.
I went to Elbasan for this purpose, as after the order given to me by Cveto Vuçiçi, I met Nedon, whom I told Bedriu to wait for me at home, leaving me at 4 o’clock in the afternoon to meet. Nedoja, gave me the home address, orienting me that there was a pink, two-story house near the House of Culture and that they lived on the second floor. As after this orientation, I went before 4pm and fell into their house. I went upstairs, knocked on a door that was their kitchen, and inside I found Nedon, Bedrina, Nedo’s mother, and the children.
Bedri was very happy when he saw me. Nedoja, went because he had the meeting of the basic organization, also the old woman left with all the children, so I was left alone with Bedrina. He told me that it was I, the first communist, who came to talk to him, from the moment the measure was taken, against him, and that until that moment, as after his statements, he had not talked to any communist. I told Bedri that a functionary of the Yugoslav Legation was interested in knowing about the trial of Koci Xoxa and especially where the claim and the material of the trial were, he was crazy about this trial, since he was a prosecutor.
Bedriu told me that the claim and the material were published in the newspaper “Zeri i Popullit”, and that in his opinion, Koci Xoxe was executed only for the relations with Yugoslavia and for this, the four secretaries of the Central Committee are responsible, who we were, calling them, Enver Hoxha, Mehmet Shehu, Tuk Jakova and me, and we must have the courage to say to the world that this weighs on us, he added, that the claim was made under the dictation of Enver Hoxha.
As for the problem with Yugoslavia, he looked at it with a pessimistic eye, citing Comrade Enver as the main obstacle and that this problem is not detached from international events and that this problem will be solved in other People’s Democracies and the internal factor, the situation in the Central Committee of the ALP.
For this, he said, it should be clarified the members of the Central Committee of the ALP, who as after him, were young and did not know the history of our Party. Bedriu, at this moment, has asked me a question, how in my opinion, who is the main obstacle to this situation created in the Party? I told him that for all this, Mehmet Shehu is an obstacle and I connected this with what I had heard from my sister, Mita Jakova, which was also Tuk’s opinion.
Bedri told me that; I was seriously mistaken and that the main one for this situation created in the party, was Enver Hoxha, he told me that; you do not love the life of our Party, calling in this case the leadership of the party; it has been a war of intrigue, for the first post. I said, I’ve been looking at this for a long time, so I’m forced to shut up and shut myself in.
Bedriu, continued to tell me that he lacked the courage to say it, and in this case he made a comparison with Tuku, saying: Tuku has the courage, he has the intuition of the class, but he is in a hurry, he does not find the moment to speak, as if I had his qualities, or he’s mine, we would make a whole, single…!
Then Bedriu, went into the history of the Party, showing me how Enver Hoxha, all the time, has tried to eliminate all those people who had the courage to speak and has come out of every situation safe. He told me that in the Berat Plenum, Enver Hoxha was rightly criticized for mistakes related to the Front and as incapable of being in charge of the leadership. He said; that only by the opportunity of Nako Spiro, he could remain at the head of the leadership and that when criticized, he became like a wet chicken.
He added that Nako Spiro was a careerist element, but in this situation, Enver used him, taking him to live in his house in Tirana, for three or four months. He said that the measures taken against Sejfulla Malëshova were unfair, and also considered unfair all the measures that were taken in the Party until the end, for the measures that were taken against him and Tuk.
Bedri, told me; that at the moment of severing relations with Yugoslavia, Enver Hoxha was able to escape by relying on the shoulders of Tuk Jakova. He told me that Enver is a great demagogue, so I say that he is the main obstacle, that if Mehmet Shehu was an obstacle, Enver Hoxha would have sacrificed Mehmet Shehu, it is enough to get out of the situation.
Bedri told me that; will tell you a case, how Enver Hoxha put Mehmet under his feet, and has him as an accomplice. He brought me to the time when Mehmeti became prime minister and how at this time, he achieved a dualism between power and the Party. At this time, a great popularity of Mehmet was achieved, to the detriment of Enver, and it seemed that Mehmet would almost take supremacy in the leadership, but at that time, a letter came from the Soviet Union, sent by a communist, that he did not tell me his name, that he addressed the Central Committee, that he should look into the case of Mehmet Shehu, how after him, he had materials that Mehmeti, was Beria’s agent, this letter was read in the Central Committee and Mehmeti at once, had demanded that action be taken against this communist.
Enver in this case, found the opportunity to have Mehmet Shehu in his hand, he said that the communist has sent the letter only to the Central Committee and we do not take any action against you and thus closed this issue in favor of Enver Hoxha.
Bedriu said that the composition of the Central Committee is made up of young elements, divided into supporters of Mehmet and Enver, so they do not know the history of the party in the past. He said that for the solution of the current situation, there would have to be a plenum, where the tone would not be given by Enver Hoxha, or better not to be at all and Bedri would make a speech there, where he would tell all openly, speaking openly, to urge the Central Committee to split into two parts, the majority would go with Bedrina and thus, eliminate Enver and the leadership.
Otherwise, after this speech, I would be taken and hanged, therefore, he said, it is not easy to resolve the situation, people must be clarified first. He said that; Enver and Mehmet, maneuver over the friendship of the Soviet Union and have made it like an umbrella always say; we have followed the example of the Soviet Union.
In fact, they are in many cases at odds with the Soviet Union. They do all this to get the help of Russia, but in case Russia for a moment cuts off the help of Enver and Mehmet, they will never let go of the front, what I will say will be the extreme of extremes, that these will cross with the West, only not to give up positions, but the people will not follow them in this policy and in such a case, the people will snatch the rifles against them.
He told me about his and Tuk’s expulsion from the party, and the development of the plenum, he told me when he was overthrown in the first row and he justified inactivity at work, because he had seen all these distortions, which were done in the Party, there was no boldly told him and had decided to shut him in.
