1910 – The first public broadcast on a radio takes place. During this broadcast, the opera Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci would be shown live. 1915 – In Avezzano, central Italy, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hits the Mercalli scale. As a result, about 33,000 people would be killed, and more than 50,000 would be injured and homeless. 1963 – Composer Tish Daija, ballet master Panajot Kanaçi, conductor Mustafa Krantja and a whole suite of artists, staged the ballet “Halili and Hajria”. Halili and Hajria is an entirely Albanian ballet, the first on the Albanian ballet scene. In 1983, this work is revived on stage. Besides the name of Llaqi Nako, in the role of Halili, there is also that of Ilir Kerni, while in the other roles Albana Sulejmani, Pëllumb Agalliu, Hajdar Shtuni, Ludmill Çakalli, etc. On December 12, 1973 it was performed for it one hundred and fifty times, while on the stage of the National Theater of Opera and Ballet and beyond it was performed over 250 times.
1963 – In Togo, West Africa, a military coup occurs, resulting in President Sylvanus Olympio being killed. 1985 – A passenger transport train accidentally sinks into a valley in Ethiopia, killing 428 passengers. This accident occurred as a result of a depreciated railway line crossing the Awash marsh in Ethiopia, causing its diversion into the valley. This was the worst rail accident in the African continent.
1993 – Established, Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The Chemical Weapons Convention is a weapons control treaty that prohibits the manufacture, storage, and use of chemical weapons and their precursors. The treaty entered into force on April 29, 1997. To date, this convention has been ratified by 165 states, including Albania.
1994 – Gjon Karma, a well-known Albanian actor, dies. Gjon Karma started his artistic activity in 1932 in Shkodra, with the company “Bogdani”. In 1945 he became an actor at the People’s Theater, where he performed over 80 roles in his artistic career, starting from the part “Gjido”, in the role of Pjetrush. He was a master in terms of character roles. He was cut for small roles, and has been described as “the big actor of small roles”. Some of the roles performed in the People’s Theater are: Babchinsky in “The Auditor”, Orgon in “Truffle”, Vurko in “After Death”, Moni in “The Prefect”, Poloni in “Hamlet”, Falstafi in “The Jolly Women of Windsor”, Lui Gui, et al. He has successfully played several roles in feature films. He retired in 1976, but for 15 years in a row worked near the theater archive, doing a wonderful job. 2012 – Cruise liner Costa Concordia sinks off the coast of Italy due to the negligence and irresponsibility of Captain Francesco Schettino. During this tragedy, 32 foreign tourists were reported killed. 65 others were slightly injured. The famous cruise ship sank, partly on the rocky coast of Giglio in Tuscany.
