1895 – Haki Stermilli was born in Sheher of Dibra, writer, journalist, head of the Albanian secret service at the turn of 1923-’24 by decree of Ahmet bej Zogolli at that time, partisan in the Second World War, member of KANÇ and representative of Dibra in the People’s Assembly. In the press and publications he held positions on the rights of Albanians across the border, republicanism and women’s rights. His most famous work is If I Were a Boy (1936). 1983 – Lebanon, Israel, and the United States sign an agreement to withdraw Israel from Lebanon. Lebanon continued to be under Israeli and Syrian military occupation during its talks.

 

 

1987 – During the Iran-Iraq War, an Iraqi Dassault Mirage F1 fires two rockets at the US Navy’s USS Stark, killing 37 crew members and injuring 21 others. The USS Stark was part of the Middle East Task Force assigned to patrol the shores of Saudi Arabia near the Iran-Iraq War exclusion border.

 

 

1992 – Three days of popular protests against the government of Thai Prime Minister Suchinda Kraprayoon begin in Bangkok, leading to a military coup that results in 52 officially confirmed deaths, hundreds injured, many disappearances, and more than 4,000 arrests. Many of those arrested are suspected of being tortured. Kraprayoon is considered the most corrupt Thai leader.

 

2013 – Jorge Rafael Videla dies at the age of 87. Videla was a senior commander in the Argentine Army and dictator of Argentina from 1976 to 1981. He came to power in a coup that toppled Isabel Peron. In 1985, two years after the return of a representative democratic government, he was prosecuted in the junta court for human rights abuses and crimes against humanity that occurred under his rule.
