1920 – The creation of the “Free City of Danzig” is announced. Later known as Gdansk in Poland, this city, during World War I, played an important role as a supply port for the German army on the eastern front. The Free City was under the protection of the League of Nations and was placed in a binding customs union with Poland. The autonomy of this city would end in 1939 when German Nazi troops invaded Poland, precisely from this city.

 

1940 – Roberto Cavalli is born in Florence. Cavalli, is an Italian stylist, and fashion designer. He is known for exotic prints and for creating the new look of jeans. Italian haute couture house Roberto Cavalli sells luxury clothing, perfumes and leather accessories. On June 18, 2013, he was awarded an Honorary Master’s Degree in Fashion Management by the Domus Academy in Milan, during a ceremony after which he delivered a master lecture. On March 29, 2019, Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli closed its stores in the US.

1969 – In Washington D.C., about half a million American protesters stage a peaceful demonstration against the war, including the symbolic “Death March.” This would be one of the largest peaceful protests against the Vietnam War, in the capital of the United States of America. Over 60,000 American soldiers would lose their lives in this years-long conflict. The US would withdraw from Vietnam in the mid-1970s.

1971 – Rudolf Abel dies in Moscow at the age of 68. Abel was a Soviet espionage officer. He was arrested on a charge of conspiracy by FBI agents in 1957. Rudolfi, was born in the UK to Russian immigrant parents. Rudolf Abel, later served in a guiding role before taking part in intelligence operations against the Germans during World War II. After the war, he began working for the KGB, which sent him to the United States, where he worked as part of an agent circle based in New York City.

1983 – The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus declares independence. She was recognized, only by Turkey. Due to a lack of international recognition, Northern Cyprus is assisted by Turkey in terms of economic, political and military support. But it is considered by the international community as an integral part of the Republic of Cyprus. Its capital is Nicosia, and the vast majority of the population of this state, is concentrated in the north-northeastern coast. Its constitutional form is a Presidential Republic.

1985 – The Anglo-Irish Treaty is signed at Hillsborough Castle by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her Irish counterpart Garrett FitzGerald. This agreement was intended to help end the problems in Northern Ireland. The treaty gave the Irish government an advisory role. While confirming that there would be no change in the constitutional position of Northern Ireland unless most of its people agreed to join the Republic.

 

1988 – In the first open election in more than a decade, voters in Pakistan elect populist candidate Benazir Bhutto as Prime Minister of Pakistan. She was the first woman to lead a democratic government in a Muslim-majority nation. Ideologically a liberal and secularist, she led or co-chaired the Pakistan People’s Party from the early 1980s until her assassination in 2007.

 

2012 – In Beijing, Xi Jingping becomes General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, and at this time, a new Standing Committee of the Politburo with seven members is inaugurated. The leader of the Communist Party of China is considered to be the highest-ranking official within the People’s Republic of China. Whereas, the Secretary General is a permanent member of the Politburo and head of the Secretariat. Xi Jingping after the end of his first term, was re-elected to another term.
